Larimer Court System & Jurisdictions
In Larimer County, two levels of state courts operate under one roof at the Justice Center in Fort Collins.
District Court handles the most serious categories of cases:
- Criminal cases for felonies
- Civil claims with demands over $25,000
- Family law — divorce, custody, alimony
- Probate and guardianship cases (probate — the legal process of managing the estate of a deceased person)
- Appeals from County Court
County Court — this is where most residents go. Small claims up to $7,500, traffic violations, misdemeanors, and civil disputes with small amounts fall under the jurisdiction of the County Court. Small Claims cases are also heard here, without the mandatory involvement of a lawyer.
Both courts operate at the Larimer County Justice Center:
For federal cases — bankruptcy, claims against the federal government — use the PACER system or contact the Federal Bankruptcy Court of Colorado.
Larimer Court Calendar & Upcoming Hearings
Daily hearing schedules are published on the Colorado Judicial Branch website. To check which cases are scheduled for today, tomorrow, or the current week, use the Larimer County docket search.
How to find the required hearing:
- Go to the search page and select "Larimer County Justice Center."
- Specify the date or date range. If you leave the fields empty, the system will show the full schedule for the selected day.
- If necessary, enter the party's last name or case number to narrow down the results.
The schedule is updated daily, but changes are possible at the last minute — hearings may be rescheduled or canceled. If it is critical for you to be present, call the Clerk of Court the day before.
An alternative way is the general Colorado Judicial Branch docket search portal, where you can select any state court, including Larimer County.
How to Get a Copy of a Larimer Court Document
The Clerk of Court at the Justice Center issues both regular and certified copies of court documents. A certified copy bears the official court seal and confirms authenticity — it is usually required for submission to other agencies or jurisdictions.
Online. Some documents can be viewed through the docket search system, but downloading the full text of a decision or obtaining a certified copy online is usually not possible. For sealed cases, submit a request form to the email 08RecordRequest@judicial.state.co.us — instructions are available on the Larimer County court page.
In person. Visit the Clerk's window at the Justice Center. Bring the case number or the full name of the party and the approximate filing date. Copies are usually made within a few minutes.
By mail. Send a written request specifying the case number, type of document, and return address:
Include a check or money order for the appropriate amount. Certified copies cost more than regular ones — exact fees are listed below.
Note: Records in juvenile cases, sealed cases, and some family cases have restricted access. Court staff do not provide legal advice but can explain the procedure for obtaining documents. For self-filing assistance, the Colorado Judicial Branch self-help forms section is useful.
Larimer Court Records Fees & Payment
Fees for Clerk of Court services are set by the Chief Judge of Colorado according to statute C.R.S. § 13-32-101 and administrative orders. Typical fees are listed below — we recommend confirming current amounts directly with the Clerk's office, as they may change.
| Service | Approximate Cost |
|---|---|
| Regular document copy (per page) | $0.75 |
| Certified copy | $20.00 per document |
| Case registry search (by name) | Free through the online portal |
| Filing a civil claim (District Court) | $224.00 |
| Filing a case in County Court | $97.00 – $137.00 (depending on type) |
| Filing a Small Claims case | $31.00 – $55.00 |
The Clerk's office accepts payment in cash, money orders, and typically credit/debit cards. Personal checks are sometimes not accepted — confirm in advance by calling (970) 494-3500.
For mail requests, include a check or money order payable to "Clerk of the District/County Court." If the amount is insufficient, the Clerk's office will contact you for additional payment, delaying processing.
Public records from other county agencies — such as sheriff's records or registered documents — are requested separately. Larimer County Sheriff's records have their own procedure and fees. Registered land documents are available through the county official records portal.
